IMMIGRATION CITIZENSHIP TEST

9 Math
Students had a math test on Wednesday, February 5th. See their marks and feedback on PowerSchool.  They have started learning inequalities, which are just slightly different from linear equations. Thursday and Friday’s assignment are workbook pages #242 to 254. Reminder that some students should be reviewing their times tables, Polynomials and basic math skills as graded in their duotangs.

9 Science
On Monday, students completed and should have handed in their written argument for or against the genetic modification of unborn humans. Students have made some excellent arguments both for and against this and generally did an excellent job on their write-ups. Check your child’s comments and marks on PowerSchool and ask to see their write up. Students have been learning more about reproduction and chromosomes as well as doing some review.

9 Math
Continuing to build their skills in linear equations. There will be a test on Wednesday, February 5th. Once they are done the 7 assignment pages, they can be working on their workbooks or harder word problems in their math textbook.

9 Science
Students had an interesting debate on whether we should allow unborn human babies to be genetically modified. This would change the human germ line as opposed to genetically modifying the somatic cells of a human after they are born. The follow up assignment is called: Designer Babies: Should we allow human genetic modification to unborn children. They are to pick one of the standpoints and make the best argument they can to support their view. This assignment should be in written format and is due: Monday, February 3rd, 2020. The assignment follows learning about genetics, adaptations, human reproduction, reproductive technologies, genetic engineering and watching a movie about genetically modified humans (Gattaca).

Chapter 4

ELA:  We have now finished the novel, Touching Spirit Bear, and are moving to Essay Writing.

We will have a final Test on Monday Jan 27th. This is also the date that the final task is due.

9 Math
We continue to work on linear equations with fractions and decimals. Students have been learning methods to simplify and solve equations. Distributive property is also now part of the equations they are solving. Khanacademy.org is a great site for students to learn or review material.

9 Science
Students have finished watching the movie Gattaca. They’ve made notes for and against genetic modification of unborn children and will have a debate on this topic early next week. They were randomly assigned to one of four groups (strongly for, slightly for, slightly against or strongly against). The follow up assignment is called: Designer Babies: Should we allow human genetic modification to unborn children. They are to pick one of the standpoints and make the best argument they can to support their view. This will be completed in written format.

Report cards will be coming out in the next few weeks so check online to see that your child has been completing their assignments.

9 Math

We have started a new topic – Linear Equations and Inequalities. Students should now be completed 8.1 sheet #2 and started on 8.1 sheet #4. The math textbook has example questions to help students review the material. There are also questions and answers in the textbook for students to practice.
Reminder for students to keep working on their multiplication recall speed.

9 Science
Report cards will be coming out in the next few weeks so check online to see that your child has been completing their assignments.
We have started learning about asexual methods of reproduction as well as human sexual reproduction from a genetic standpoint. Other things being covered include: genetics, genetic modification of organisms, cross breeding, hybridization and the future of genetic modification and GMO’s.

ELA:

We continue to do work with  our Novel Touching Spirit Bear and have read to the end of Chapter 19.  Monday there will be a quiz for Ch 14-19

SOCIAL:

This week we finished up Chapter 3, Charter of Rights and Freedoms, and have moved to Chapter 4, Collective Rights. We will have a cumulative test for Chapter 1, 2 &3 on Thursday January 23rd. Students have been given a study guide to help them review the topics.

Dec 9-13

9-1 Math
Students worked on polynomials ex. (3x2 + 5x – 4) – (-2x2 – 2x +5). Distributive property ex. 2x(3x2 – 3x +7) was covered and they had their polynomials unit test on Thursday, December 12, 2019. Parents should check their child’s math workbook to see how much of the polynomials unit has been completed. Essentially the whole unit should be completed before the unit final. If a child is not done, they should be encouraged to complete it as soon as possible even if a unit final has already been done. It’s also important to check to see that a child is marking the work that they have completed.

9 Science
Students are working on developing their science literacy skills by summarizing a variety of science articles and news items. They then make annotations and notes to eventually create a precis (60 or slightly fewer word summary). Students were given a choice of 5 articles to create a precis from. Topics are related to the science curriculum. Students have also been learning about biodiversity and furthering their understanding of how it develops and changes over time.

Social: Students are working on their Google Slide Presentation on one of the historical events and relating it to the Charter of Rights. Please see pgs 100-103 for these events and answer the following questions:
What happened?- explain the history of this event.
What were the consequences on the rights of the people due to the government of Canada?
Quote and explain what parts of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms would protect these people from this event happening today.
Charter of Rights and Freedoms Graffiti Art assignment is Due Wed. Dec 18th

Chapter 3 work booklet is due Wednesday Dec 4th
Chapter 3 package

Students have begun our Graffiti Art Project on Rights and Freedoms. They will work on this when they have extra time in class. The due date is Dec 16th.

9 Math

Students had their second and larger polynomials test on Thursday, Dec. 5th.. The test was taken up and given back Friday, December 6th and students were asked to make corrections and check those corrections. Later next week (probably Thursday, Dec. 12) they will be having a polynomials unit final. Unit finals include the same material covered in the first two tests but also multiplying and dividing polynomials as well as more distributive property.

9 Science

Students should have handed in their written explanation of speciation. This assignment uses a number of scientific terms to explain how new species are created and adapt to their environments.

Video we continued watching on history of planet Earth and history of life:

Students discussed how the video illustrated and gave examples of isolated populations, reproductive isolation, environmental pressure, niche – broad vs specialized, extinction, adaptations, common ancestor and so on.
