Feb 24 - 28

Power-Up: Make sure you are caught up to Language Power 30 for Monday 24th:
LP 29 & 30

SOCIAL-

Thursday March 5th will be an Immigration Test on Chapter #5. In partners, students have been working on an online Module for this Unit and we have had some interesting conversations about type of learning and about being self-directed.

ELA:

We began a film study this week 'Freedom Writers' and students will eventually write an essay based on a theme of their choice from that movie. They will use evidence from the movie and other text to develop their content. Students who didn't finish their first essay (focusing on organization), needed to finish that first before moving into the next essay, and will need to come in at lunch to view the movie, so they are not getting behind.

Math
Students are continuing to build their skills in linear equations and inequalities. They will be having a test on Tuesday, March 3rd. They should be done topic sheet Master 4.24 by then and be working their way through the Level 3 sheet that has 13 questions on it – many that are word problems.
9 Science

Students have been learning about electricity and circuits. They have covered topics #1-3 (see comments and marks on PowerSchool) and did a couple of days of lab work.

PowerUp: Welcome back Mr.Lopez! Language Power due Friday
LP 27
LP 28

9 Math
The focus continues to be graphing equations and working on inequalities. Reminder that students are able to learn past material and get their marks raised when they have shown they have put in new effort and time to learn this material.

9 Science
Students are learning about electricity. They did a mini lab Thursday and had topic #1 & 2 to complete. Please regularly check PowerSchool for comments on your child’s effort, learning and marks.

9 Math
Students are doing more work with equations. Figuring out how to convert equations/slopes to input/output charts and graphs. If given one of the aforementioned 3 types, they should be able to come up with the other two types.

9 Science
Students had a science unit final test on Wednesday, February 12th. Check for their marks on PowerSchool. They will be doing the electricity unit next.

Social:  This week we read and discussed the following 2 articles in class. Students also completed a group assignment: Immigration Act over time and presented them to the class.

9 Math
Students had a math test on Wednesday, February 5th. See their marks and feedback on PowerSchool.  They have started learning inequalities, which are just slightly different from linear equations. Thursday and Friday’s assignment are workbook pages #242 to 254. Reminder that some students should be reviewing their times tables, Polynomials and basic math skills as graded in their duotangs.

9 Science
On Monday, students completed and should have handed in their written argument for or against the genetic modification of unborn humans. Students have made some excellent arguments both for and against this and generally did an excellent job on their write-ups. Check your child’s comments and marks on PowerSchool and ask to see their write up. Students have been learning more about reproduction and chromosomes as well as doing some review.

9 Math
Continuing to build their skills in linear equations. There will be a test on Wednesday, February 5th. Once they are done the 7 assignment pages, they can be working on their workbooks or harder word problems in their math textbook.

9 Science
Students had an interesting debate on whether we should allow unborn human babies to be genetically modified. This would change the human germ line as opposed to genetically modifying the somatic cells of a human after they are born. The follow up assignment is called: Designer Babies: Should we allow human genetic modification to unborn children. They are to pick one of the standpoints and make the best argument they can to support their view. This assignment should be in written format and is due: Monday, February 3rd, 2020. The assignment follows learning about genetics, adaptations, human reproduction, reproductive technologies, genetic engineering and watching a movie about genetically modified humans (Gattaca).
