Dec 9-13

9-1 Math
Students worked on polynomials ex. (3x2 + 5x – 4) – (-2x2 – 2x +5). Distributive property ex. 2x(3x2 – 3x +7) was covered and they had their polynomials unit test on Thursday, December 12, 2019. Parents should check their child’s math workbook to see how much of the polynomials unit has been completed. Essentially the whole unit should be completed before the unit final. If a child is not done, they should be encouraged to complete it as soon as possible even if a unit final has already been done. It’s also important to check to see that a child is marking the work that they have completed.

9 Science
Students are working on developing their science literacy skills by summarizing a variety of science articles and news items. They then make annotations and notes to eventually create a precis (60 or slightly fewer word summary). Students were given a choice of 5 articles to create a precis from. Topics are related to the science curriculum. Students have also been learning about biodiversity and furthering their understanding of how it develops and changes over time.

Chapter 3 package

Students have begun our Graffiti Art Project on Rights and Freedoms. They will work on this when they have extra time in class. The due date is Dec 16th.

9 Math

Students had their second and larger polynomials test on Thursday, Dec. 5th.. The test was taken up and given back Friday, December 6th and students were asked to make corrections and check those corrections. Later next week (probably Thursday, Dec. 12) they will be having a polynomials unit final. Unit finals include the same material covered in the first two tests but also multiplying and dividing polynomials as well as more distributive property.

9 Science

Students should have handed in their written explanation of speciation. This assignment uses a number of scientific terms to explain how new species are created and adapt to their environments.

Video we continued watching on history of planet Earth and history of life:

Students discussed how the video illustrated and gave examples of isolated populations, reproductive isolation, environmental pressure, niche – broad vs specialized, extinction, adaptations, common ancestor and so on.
