Monday March 30th

Good Day and welcome back from Spring Break!

I hope you all stayed safe and had a nice relaxing break with your family.

There is still lots of learning happening on our end and more will be coming out tomorrow. I will be calling you to have a brief conversation tomorrow or Wednesday and I look forward to hearing how things are going.

The purpose of my call will be to ask you a few questions:

1. Do you have access to a computer, laptop, iPad/tablet or smartphone?
2. Do you  have access to the internet?
3. Well-being check - How are you doing?  How is your family doing?  Is there anything that you or your family need assistance with?

If you have access to technology please go onto D2L and sign in using your CBE username and password. It is important that you do this before the call, so that I can document and troubleshoot .

We will be using Google Meet as a way to communicate, You can access it 2 ways: through your Google CBE Account or you could download that app onto your device. I believe it is called Google Hangout Meet. More information will come about times this will be happening during the week.

For now please do not hesitate to email me with questions and I look forwarded to speaking to you and your families soon,

Ms Fedchun

Wednesday March 18th

Hi 9.1!!!!!!

Well, what a week it has been! Please stay safe! First, I want to thank everyone in our homeroom for an amazing year so far. I looking forward to continuing our work together, whatever direction that takes us, (I am not entirely sure as of yet.) Second, I am only an email away jlthorpefed@cbe.ab.ca if you need anything. It was great to see you yesterday if you came out to clean your locker, and please note that the school will be opened until 6 pm on Wednesday if you haven't already come to get your belongings.

Here are a few website to use for now and when we have a solid direction from CBE there will be more to follow!

ELA:

We have now finished essay writing and if you could finish your essay on Freedom Writers and email me that by the end of the week, that would be awesome. But here is a writing assignment to start today.

WRITING ASSIGNMENT  Primary Source for the COVID 19 Pandemic. Please read the assignment and starting today document anything about this event. (Watch the News) Please ensure you are writing at least 1/2- to one page each day. More to come with this, but for now you can get started.

I will keep you posted after the break as to the direction we will take moving forward.

Have a great Spring Break and keep your minds active!
Ms Jennifer Fedchun

Please continue to check PowerSchool for comments and marks on recent assignments/tests or for things that have been handed in late.

The Calgary Board has been setting up material for parent and teacher online use and learning. A reminder that khanacademy.org is a world renowned and CBE approved website for learning math. Khan Academy also has learning in other subjects. Students or parents can (thought they don't have to) set up an account on there to track student progress. There are a wide assortment of math lessons, quizzes and tests to help students learn and track their progress. I'd also remind students that knowing your times tables and being able to recall them quickly, is a very important skill and one that high school teachers see as fundamental for a student to be successful. In other words - practice your times tables! Parents/guardians also teach your child strategies that can be used when a child does not have the times table memorized.

For science, I want to remind students that there are a lot of fun and educational science YouTube channels available.
ASAP Science
Minute Earth
Minute Physics
Veritasium
Kurzgesagt
Vsauce
It's Okay to be Smart
SpaceRip     (my personal favourite)
Many successful science channels have developed sister channels as spin offs.

Also be sure to check your favourite science website for links to similar channels

Missing you guys!

SOCIAL:  Food For Thought:

We have now begun our Economics Unit with our Fedchun Bucks, Next week, we will be discussing Supply and Demand, students will be able to buy their desks from me, so they do not have to pay rent. Students receive $500 pay each week and are encouraged to start their own business. This makes for great dinner time conversation.

SOCIAL TEXTBOOK CHAPTER 6

ELA: Students now need to have their planning page finished for their 2nd Essay which will focus on Content and Organization.

9 Math
Please see PowerSchool for regular updates such as day-to-day work effort, grades, assignment completion and marks. Students have been working on word equation problems and will be having a test on Tuesday, March 17th if all goes according to plan.

9 Science

Please see PowerSchool for regular updates such as day-to-day work effort, grades, assignment completion and marks. Students have been learning to calculate voltage, efficiency, power, current. Kilowatt hours and electrical costs. It would be great if you could show your child your electricity bill and explain the breakdown of kilowatt hours and cost as well as delivery cost and so on. This would help make a real world connection between their in class learning and their own lives. Students also learned a bit about home electrical systems and wiring. Ask them if they know where the home main electrical panel is. Ask them if them about the dangers of this panel and other electrical things in the home and how to reduce the risks.

Mar 2 - 6

PowerUp: Students will be working on some real-life skills this month! Budgeting and expenses, taxes and investments. They may even be coming home to talk to you, parents, about how much things cost in your family.
Make your estimations (you do not need to fill in the income piece) for a monthly budget: What do YOU think your household spends on these things? After you make your estimation, have a conversation with the adults in your house, how close or how far off are you from what is actually spent each month?
Money Under 30

Social: Immigration Unit Final on Thursday Chapter # 5 in the textbook. We will begin our Economic Unit, with Fedchun Bucks. Our classroom will become an economy where students will be paid to come to school, but will have to pay rent on their desks. A great way to learn how money flows through our society.

ELA: We have now finish our Film Study, Freedom Writers and will be our 2nd essay, this time focusing on Content and Organization. By the end of the week, students will have an outline/plan for their essay.

9 Math
They just finished a unit test of Linear Relations and have been working on word problems involving rate, time and distance. They are utilizing their equation skills to help them solve these problems. See PowerSchool for ongoing comments, completion and marks – especially on the recent test.

 9 Science

Students finished a lab on electricity and handed in a precis on battery technology. Students had a choice of 9 articles on recent battery research and findings. See PowerSchool for ongoing comments, completion and marks.
