Chapter 4 


ELA:  We have now finished the novel, Touching Spirit Bear, and are moving to Essay Writing.


We will have a final Test on Monday Jan 27th. This is also the date that the final task is due.


9 Math
We continue to work on linear equations with fractions and decimals. Students have been learning methods to simplify and solve equations. Distributive property is also now part of the equations they are solving. Khanacademy.org is a great site for students to learn or review material.

9 Science
Students have finished watching the movie Gattaca. They’ve made notes for and against genetic modification of unborn children and will have a debate on this topic early next week. They were randomly assigned to one of four groups (strongly for, slightly for, slightly against or strongly against). The follow up assignment is called: Designer Babies: Should we allow human genetic modification to unborn children. They are to pick one of the standpoints and make the best argument they can to support their view. This will be completed in written format.

Jan 13-17

SOCIAL: Here is the video we watched in class on Monday. For Tuesday& Wednesday we will be creating a timeline of the perspectives of First Nations and the Canadian Government. Please use textbook pages # 128-135 to complete this timeline. Please see exemplar on whiteboard and use the rubric provided for guidance.

MIDTERM:

Reminder that Tuesday Jan 23rd is their Midterm for Chapters 1-3 in Social. They have been given a study guide to study from as well as their notes and the online textbook.

ELA: Touching Spirit Bear Novel Study

Students have been given their final assignments for the novel study Touching Spirit Bear. Students can choose 1 of the 6 summative tasks to complete. This is due Jan 27th.

Homework for this week:

Students need to have read to the end of Chapter 21 and completed the questions and letter assignments by Friday,  Jan 17th.


9 Math
The current focus is on linear equations. Students should have completed assignments 8.1 #1 and #4,
9 Science
We are continuing to learn about reproduction, genetics and genetic engineering.

Students  watched the movie Gattaca and were given an assignment on it. They will be having a debate on the movie and discuss the potential consequences (good and bad) of genetically modifying humans.

Jan 7-10


Report cards will be coming out in the next few weeks so check online to see that your child has been completing their assignments.

9 Math

We have started a new topic – Linear Equations and Inequalities. Students should now be completed 8.1 sheet #2 and started on 8.1 sheet #4. The math textbook has example questions to help students review the material. There are also questions and answers in the textbook for students to practice.
Reminder for students to keep working on their multiplication recall speed.

9 Science

We have started learning about asexual methods of reproduction as well as human sexual reproduction from a genetic standpoint. Other things being covered include: genetics, genetic modification of organisms, cross breeding, hybridization and the future of genetic modification and GMO’s.

ELA:

We continue to do work with  our Novel Touching Spirit Bear and have read to the end of Chapter 19.  Monday there will be a quiz for Ch 14-19

SOCIAL:

This week we finished up Chapter 3, Charter of Rights and Freedoms, and have moved to Chapter 4, Collective Rights. We will have a cumulative test for Chapter 1, 2 &3 on Thursday January 23rd. Students have been given a study guide to help them review the topics.
