SOCIAL:
This week we completed the Unit Final on Government and we are moving to the Youth Criminal Justice Act Unit. Students can access the online textbook for Chapter 2 in the original blog.
Intro Video

MATH:
We did some review of rational numbers and added some essential notes to student duotangs. Keep in mind any student that does NOT have all level 3’s on the marks sheet within their duotang should keep working on this at home until they are up to level 3’s by the end of the year. Work in the duotangs is remedial and designed to help ensure all students reach at least a minimal level on basic rationals. Extra support on this is available the second half of lunch hour on Thursday’s in the computer lab where Mr. Davis will help.
Students should have completed pages 51 to 82 in their math workbooks on Powers. Many of these pages are example questions and others often only have a few questions to do. These workbooks include only basic questions up to level 2. The textbook has more level 3 and 4 questions. Expect a quiz on powers early next week.

SCIENCE:
Students completed a test on topics #1 to 4. The test has been marked but a few students had to write the test Friday so the class will get back their test marks Monday.
Reminder that students have now finished day #7 of 10 on their research projects. Each day they should have completed approximately half a page of point form notes and found one good website or book resources they used to gather more information. Students who are behind on this are encouraged to come for help on Thursdays the second half of lunch in the computer lab.

We are working on powers and order of operations with powers/exponents. Here is an introductory video on powers: https://www.khanacademy.org/math/pre-algebra/pre-algebra-exponents-radicals/pre-algebra-exponents/v/introduction-to-exponents

More advanced videos are available on this same site.

Science - Davis
Science test on Tuesday October 21.
Students have now had 6 out of 10 full class periods to work on their space research projects. Please ask your child how their research is going on the project. They should have completed approximately ½ a page of point form notes and one good reference each day they’ve had to work on their project. They have also been studying how the analysis of light from stars (spectral analysis) helps scientists study the elemental makeup of stars.

October 7 - 10

ELA- FEDCHUN:  We began our Gothic Unit with the short story by Edgar Allan Poe, Tell Tale Heart.. and discussed Unreliable Narrator, types of Irony, and Literary Devices, as well as some vocabulary work. We watched a video about it and compared it to the short story. This assignment is now homework and needs to be handed into the proper bin. If you do not have a handout, please see me for a copy. Next week, we will continue to look at Edgar Allan Poe works: Raven, and Black Cat.

Tell Tale Heart Short Story

SOCIAL- FEDCHUN- This week we continued to look at and discuss the Federal Election. We watched the 2019 Federal Debate, which you can find on the link below. We filled in a graphic organizer to get a better understanding of the candidates political platforms and their perspectives on current issues. We ran out of time, so students are strongly encouraged to finish watching the debate. Next week we will finish our unit on Federal Government and have a Unit Test on Tuesday, Oct 22nd

Homework: Federal Election Scrapbook is Due Oct 15th.
Student Vote will take place on Oct 18th.

Federal Debate 2019

Science - Davis
Students have now had 4 of 10 days to work on their space research projects. They have some very interesting questions they are exploring. They are also learning about telescopes, spectroscopy and the history of ideas about space.

Math - Davis

Students each have a duotang at school that includes their marks on basic skills they need to work on. Included in these duotangs are personalized questions, lessons and worksheets to help students improve their skills. Extra material is readily available at the request of the students or parent/guardian.

Students continue to develop a deeper understanding of rational numbers (fractions/decimals/percents) with a focus on estimation skills and coming up with reasonable answers.

9-1 9-2 Science

Students have now spent 3 days doing a project proposal and 2 full class periods to research and work on their space projects. They should have at least one good reference and half a page of point form notes on average per full work period. They will have 10 periods in total until their projects are due. The questions that students have chosen to answer for their projects are very interesting and proving to be very eye opening for students.
